Brussels Airport causes €1 billion in health damage per year

Mon Apr 03 2023

Brussels Airport is causing significant health problems for locals due to high levels of nitrogen, CO2 emissions, and aircraft noise, according to a study by the Flemish Association for a Better Environment (BBL).

The study reveals that 220,000 residents are severely impacted by noise, with 109,000 experiencing serious sleep disturbances.

This noise triggers a "fight-or-flight" response in the body, leading to health issues such as hypertension, heart disease, reduced immunity, and poor mental health. The financial cost of these health damages is estimated to exceed €1 billion annually.

Despite the severe impact, Brussels Airport has not taken adequate measures to address these issues and shows little ambition to improve the situation, even as it profits significantly.

The airport's focus on sustainability initiatives like solar panels and electrifying ground traffic does not reduce aircraft noise, leaving the community to bear the burdens of its operations.
