Communities near Sea-Tac Airport are suing the Port of Seattle, Alaska Air, and Delta over toxic pollution concerns
Communities around Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are suing the Port of Seattle, Alaska Air, and Delta Airlines for allegedly emitting toxic pollutants and neglecting to address the issue.
Filed in King County Superior Court, the class-action lawsuit claims over 300,000 people, including 60,000 children, have been exposed to harmful substances like carbon monoxide, lead, and particulate matter in a designated "Contamination Zone" encompassing Burien, Des Moines, SeaTac, and Tukwila.
The suit highlights higher rates of cancer, heart disease, and respiratory issues in these areas, particularly affecting lower-income, immigrant, and minority residents. One plaintiff attributes her child's fatal cancer to airport pollution.
The lawsuit seeks remediation, compensation, and medical monitoring funds for affected residents, citing a study linking the pollutants to airport operations.
