London City Airport expansion rejected by councillors over noise pollution fears
A proposal to increase flights from London City Airport was unanimously rejected by Newham’s Strategic Development Committee due to noise pollution concerns.
The airport sought to boost annual passenger numbers from 6.5 million to 9 million and extend Saturday operating hours.
Despite the airport's argument that extended hours would encourage investment in quieter aircraft and meet passenger demand, Councillors and objectors cited significant noise pollution and carbon emission concerns. The decision will now be reviewed by the Greater London Authority.
Opponents, including Cllr Nate Higgins, argued the airport negatively impacts local residents and should be closed, not expanded.
The airport expressed disappointment and is considering its next steps.
