New LAX Flight Paths Are Too Loud For Malibu, Officials Say
MALIBU, CA — Malibu city officials have filed a petition with a federal appeals court in response to new flight paths affecting Los Angeles International Airport, the city announced this week.
"Peace and quiet are essential to the health and well-being of our community in Malibu, just like any other community in America," stated Malibu Mayor Steve Uhring. "However, our residents, as well as the habitats and wildlife of the Santa Monica Mountains, are significantly affected by aircraft noise. We urge the FAA to collaborate with Malibu to find effective solutions that preserve our quality of life."
The city has identified three new flight paths that notably impact Malibu. A decision made by the Federal Aviation Administration in February excluded these paths from further environmental assessments, prompting the current appeal before the court to reassess this ruling.
Malibu officials aim to initiate discussions with the FAA concerning the local impacts of these flight paths, stressing the importance of addressing these issues seriously and developing flight procedures that minimize their impact.
"While litigation alone may not achieve our goals, Malibu anticipates that the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals review will encourage aviation regulators to engage in constructive dialogue and collaborate with us to find mutually acceptable solutions," the city stated.
