Nike's Private Jet Travels Generate Pollution
Nike's corporate jets have been heavily polluting the environment. In 2023, the jets released as much carbon dioxide as a car driving 10.9 million miles, which is equivalent to driving around the Earth's equator 438 times.
The pollution also matched the emissions of burning 4.7 million pounds of coal. Reports from ProPublica and the Oregonian have highlighted that private jets are much worse for the environment than commercial flights.
For instance, a Gulfstream G650ER emits about 4.5 times more CO2 per passenger than a Boeing 737. If the jet carries only one passenger, its pollution is 80 times higher than that of a commercial aircraft.
Nike's CEO, John Donahoe, often flew on the jets, including frequent landings at Moffett Field near his Bay Area home.
After public scrutiny, Nike made it more difficult to track these flights by removing the jets from FlightAware's tracking service. The company also recently cut its sustainability staff by 30%, undermining its pledges to reduce carbon emissions.
