Qantas' 'carbon neutral' flights are facing allegations of 'greenwashing,' with claims submitted to the ACCC accusing the airline of misleading passengers

A climate group has filed a complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), urging an investigation into Qantas for allegedly misleading passengers about its "carbon neutral" flights.

The Environmental Defenders Office, on behalf of Climate Integrity, claims that Qantas is engaging in greenwashing by promoting itself as sustainable without a credible plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The airline's carbon-offset program relies on purchasing offsets for projects like rainforest conservation, which Climate Integrity argues misleads customers into thinking their flight emissions have been fully compensated. The complaint references a European greenwashing case against KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and calls for similar scrutiny.

Qantas maintains that its efforts, such as using sustainable aviation fuel, demonstrate its commitment to reducing emissions.
