Researcher Probes Ultrafine Particles’ Ties to Airfield Activity
Fri Apr 19 2024
Researchers, led by Dr. Neelakshi Hudda from Tufts University, have detected high concentrations of ultrafine particles in Bedford neighborhoods possibly linked to aircraft operations at Hanscom Field.
These findings, presented at a recent Hanscom Field Advisory Commission meeting, suggest potential health impacts, although the exact implications remain uncertain due to limited regulatory guidelines from the EPA.
Ultrafine particles, known for causing inflammation and emitted in large quantities by jet engines, serve as indicators of aviation emissions' impact on local air quality.
The ongoing study aims to correlate these particles with flight activity data to better understand their origins and effects.
